12 °Bx in gravity-
1.048 SG in Brix-
How it works
Both scales measure dissolved solids. We convert between them with the standard cubic relationships used by brewing software, so the conversion stays accurate across the full wort range.
SG = 1 + Brix / (258.6 − (Brix/258.2)·227.1)
Brix = (182.4601·SG − 775.6821)·SG² + 1262.7794·SG − 669.5622

For refractometer readings after fermentation has started, use the refractometer correction calculator instead - alcohol skews raw Brix.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert Brix to specific gravity?
- Brix and specific gravity both measure dissolved sugar but on different scales. Roughly, SG ≈ 1 + (Brix / 258.6 − …); this tool uses the full conversion in both directions so you can enter either value and read the other.
- Is 1 Brix the same as 4 gravity points?
- Close as a rule of thumb - each degree Brix is about 4 SG points near typical wort strengths - but the relationship is slightly curved, so use the exact conversion for accuracy, especially at high gravity.
